What is embedded vs. aggregate?

Editorial team Published on

An embedded health insurance deductible has individual limits for each family member inside a total family limit, while an aggregate deductible is a single shared bucket that all family members must fill together.

Embedded Deductibles

  • Individual cap: Each person has their own smaller deductible.
  • How it works: Once one person meets their individual amount, the insurance starts paying for that person's care. They do not have to wait for the full family total.
  • Best for: Families where only one person has high medical bills or needs a major surgery.

Aggregate Deductibles

  • Shared total: There is only one large family deductible amount.
  • How it works: No insurance payments begin for anyone until the entire family sum is paid. One person can pay the whole amount, or multiple people can combine their bills to reach it.
  • Best for: Families where multiple members use a moderate amount of medical care.
