Can I be on Medicare and have an FSA?

Yes, you can have an employer-sponsored Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and be enrolled in Medicare at the same time, as long as you are actively employed and eligible for your employer's plan.

How They Work Together

  • Simultaneous Coverage: You can contribute to and use an FSA while enrolled in Medicare Part A. (Unlike a Health Savings Account, or HSA, where Medicare enrollment stops new contributions, Medicare does not block FSA contributions).
  • Eligible Expenses: You can use pre-tax FSA funds to pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, prescription drugs, and medical supplies.
  • Excluded Expenses: You cannot use FSA funds to pay for Medicare premium payments (such as Part B, Part C, or Part D premiums).
