How do I renew my expired Medicare card?
Original Medicare and standard Medicare cards do not expire or require annual renewal as long as you continue paying your monthly premiums.
If you are worried about your coverage or need a physical replacement card, you can manage it through the official Medicare Portal.
Understanding Medicare Renewals
- Original Medicare (Parts A & B): Never expires. It renews automatically every year as long as you pay your Part B (and/or Part A) premiums on time.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Part D: These private plans renew automatically each year unless your insurance company stops offering the plan in your area. If your plan is canceled, you will receive a non-renewal notice in October and can pick a new plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7).
- Medicaid vs. Medicare: If you have Medicaid (state-based health assistance) rather than Medicare, that coverage does require periodic renewal or recertification through your state's Medicaid Benefits Portal.
