You can check a Medicare prior authorization status by logging into your regional Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) provider portal (such as Noridian Prior Authorizations or WPS GHA Prior Auth Search) or by using public MAC status tools.

How to Check Status

  • Use the MAC Portal: Log into your specific MAC's secure online portal, navigate to the Prior Auth/Pre-Claim section, and select the Status Inquiry tab.
  • Use Public Search Tools: Some MACs offer public lookup tools where you can enter the facility or supplier's NPI (National Provider Identifier) and PTAN (Provider Transaction Access Number), along with the beneficiary's last name, first initial, last 4 digits of their Medicare ID, and the prior authorization type.
  • Call Customer Service: If you cannot find the status online, call your specific regional MAC's prior authorization customer service line (for example, Novitas Solutions at 855-340-5975).

Required Information

  • Facility or supplier NPI and PTAN
  • Beneficiary's Medicare number (or last 4 digits) and name
  • HCPCS or CPT procedure code submitted on the request
  • Tracking or Unique Tracking Number (UTN), if assigned
