What are the most common problems with Vaillant boilers?
The most common problems with Vaillant boilers include low water pressure, ignition failure, and frozen condensate pipes.
Common Problems and Fault Codes
- Low Water Pressure (F.22 / F.75): Pressure drops below 1 bar due to minor leaks or bleeding radiators. You can fix this yourself by using the external filling loop to top the pressure back up to 1.2–1.5 bar.
- Ignition Failure and Flame Loss (F.28 / F.29): The boiler fails to ignite or stay lit. This often happens if the gas supply is interrupted or a condensate pipe is frozen.
- Frozen Condensate Pipe: In winter, the plastic waste pipe outside the home freezes and blocks. This triggers a lockout. You can thaw it by pouring warm (not boiling) water over the pipe.
- Pressure Sensor or Pump Issues (F.75): The boiler cannot detect a pressure change when the internal pump starts. This may require a professional to clean out system sludge or replace the sensor.
- Overheating (F.20): The safety temperature limiter shuts the boiler down. Causes include poor water circulation, a stuck diverter valve, or a failing pump.
- Leaking Valves: Diverter valves and internal rubber hoses in older EcoTec models can wear down and leak over time.
When to Call a Professional
You can safely repressurize your system or thaw an external pipe on your own. However, internal component failures, persistent lockouts, gas valve errors (such as F.61 or F.62), and electrical issues require a certified Gas Safe engineer.
