What does a cracked engine block sound like?

Editorial team Published on

A cracked engine block does not always make a single, specific sound, but it often causes heavy engine knocking, a deep metallic ticking, or a hissing/whistling noise.

Common Sounds of a Cracked Block

  • Deep Knocking or Striking: A severe crack can cause a loss of structural support or low oil pressure/coolant mixing, leading to a deep, heavy knocking sound (similar to a bad rod bearing or metal hitting metal) as internal parts lose alignment or lubrication.
  • Ticking or Tapping: Compression escaping through a hairline crack can produce a rhythmic ticking or tapping noise that increases with the engine's RPM.
  • Hissing or Whistling: If the crack extends to the exterior or lets pressurized coolant/exhaust escape, you may hear a sharp hissing, whistling, or bubbling sound from under the hood.

Other Major Warning Signs

Because sounds can mimic other issues (like a blown head gasket), look for these accompanying symptoms:

  • Milky Oil: Coolant leaking into the oil passages creates a thick, brown, or "chocolate milk" residue under the oil cap or on the dipstick.
  • White Exhaust Smoke: Sweet-smelling white smoke or steam coming from the tailpipe means coolant is burning inside the cylinders.
  • Overheating: Rapid coolant loss or puddles under the vehicle due to external cracks.
  • Misfires: Rough idling and a shaking engine caused by loss of compression or wet spark plugs.
