Which is safer, WhatsApp or Messenger?
WhatsApp is generally safer and more private than Facebook Messenger for regular messaging because it offers end-to-end encryption by default for all chats and calls, whereas Messenger does not apply it automatically across all conversation types.
Why WhatsApp is Safer
- End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): WhatsApp encrypts all messages, voice calls, and video calls by default using the Signal Protocol. Only you and the person you are communicating with can read or listen to them; Meta cannot view the contents of the messages.
- Default Protection: You do not need to turn on a special setting or start a separate "secret" mode to protect your day-to-day chats.
Where Both Apps Fall Short (Privacy Risks)
- Metadata Collection: Both WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are owned by Meta. Even though they cannot read your message text, they collect extensive metadata—such as who you message, how often, your IP address, device info, and location data.
- Cloud Backups: Chat backups saved to Google Drive or iCloud are not end-to-end encrypted by default unless you manually enable encrypted backups in your WhatsApp settings.
- Messenger E2EE Gaps: While Facebook Messenger supports end-to-end encryption, it is not always the default state for every single chat type or integrated feature.
