How often does Medicare send you a new card?

Editorial team Published on

You do not get a new Original Medicare card on a regular schedule.

When You Get a Card

  • Initial Enrollment: You receive your card automatically when you first sign up for Medicare (around age 65 or due to a disability).
  • No Expiration: Original Medicare cards do not have an expiration date and remain valid as long as you maintain your eligibility and pay your premiums.
  • Replacements: You only get a new card if you request a replacement because your old one is lost, stolen, or damaged.

How to Request a Replacement

  • Online: Log into your secure account at Medicare.gov to print a copy or order a new card.
  • By Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
  • Private Plans: If you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan, those private plan ID cards might change or reissue if your specific plan details or co-pays change year-to-year.
