Why is Anthem shutting down?

Electronic Arts (EA) and BioWare officially shut down the Anthem Game Update servers on January 12, 2026, rendering the online-only action RPG completely unplayable.

Key Reasons for the Shutdown

  • Commercial Underperformance: Despite selling over 5 million lifetime copies, the game failed to meet EA's high commercial and player-engagement expectations after a sluggish launch (selling roughly 2 million units in its first week against steep targets).
  • Troubled Development ("Development Hell"): The title spent nearly seven years in development at BioWare, but major design overhauls, narrative reboots, and a lack of consistent leadership meant true production only began in the final 18 months before release.
  • Frostbite Engine Struggles: BioWare built the game on EA's Frostbite engine, which proved ill-suited for a cooperative PvE live-service game, leading to severe technical bugs, optimization problems, and loading issues.
  • Cancellation of "Anthem NEXT": Following the rough launch, BioWare planned a massive 2.0 overhaul known as Anthem NEXT (or Anthem 2.0) to fix core gameplay, loot systems, and endgame content. BioWare officially canceled that revamp in February 2021, leaving the game in a minimal maintenance state until EA finally pulled the plug.
  • High Live-Service Maintenance Costs: Maintaining live servers and infrastructure for a game with a small, declining active player base no longer made financial sense for EA. Because the game was designed strictly as an online-only experience with no offline mode, shutting down the official servers made it impossible to play.
